Unique recreation trail over Lake Butte des Morts now open

Community open house and special ceremony kicked off “First Across” event

(Green Bay) The crown jewel of the new Lake Butte des Morts Causeway recently unveiled its unique features to the public. The Tribal Heritage Crossing of the Wiouwash State Recreation Trial, which spans the entire length of the Lake Butte des Morts Bridge, opened on Saturday, October 12.

The new causeway trail features a pedestrian/bike multi-use trial, 13 beautiful, Native American kiosks, fishing access, three overpasses dedicated to Earth, Fire and Water, and artwork displaying the rich culture and history of Oshkosh.

A community open house, called “First Across,” was held between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., last Saturday, October 12, on the grounds of Eckland Motorsports, 2794 Marine Dr., Oshkosh. The open house featured a non-competitive fun run/walk, dog walk, interactive displays, food, music, expert anglers on site with advice, and a special memento for people who crossed the new causeway and brought back a ticket from the other side. Everyone who attended the open house also received a “First Across” commemorative pin.

A special linking ceremony of the Wiouwash Trial and Tribal Heritage Crossing was held at Eckland Motorsports. Local leaders and Native American dignitaries unveiled a commemorative brick that links the Wiouwash Trial to the Tribal Heritage Crossing. Now that the Open House and Linking Ceremony was held, the trail is now open to the public.

The Lake Butte des Morts Causeway and Tribal Heritage Crossing features design characteristics dedicated to Wisconsin’s Native American tribes. Special overlooks and kiosks display information about the 11 federally recognized Native American Tribes of Wisconsin, and a Native American architect designed aesthetic features for sections of the causeway that are inspired by the natural elements earth, fire and water. At the north end of the causeway, a kiosk will provide information about the history of Lake Butte des Morts. Street parking, if needed, is available on Marine Drive.

The vehicle overpass for the causeway opened this past July (2013).
